Please Don't Declaw Your Cat
Should you declaw your cat? The answer is no. Why? It is painful, cruel and may result in behavior changes. Declawing is not remotely similar to a manicure. Declawing is an amputation of the last joint of the toe. Please click here to read Veterinarian, Dr. Christianne Schelling's detailed accounting of the procedure. Dr. Schelling provides another link please click here which addresses the technical facts about declawing. It is disturbing to see the images however I strongly suggest you read the article carefully before rendering decisions about declawing your cat.
The image above illustrates my Bengal Cat Lucy using her claws to quickly climb a tree. In the event your cat sneaks outside and wanders through the neighborhood the poor animal has no defense mechanism against predators. You can keep the nails trimmed and teach your cat to use a scratching post effectively. Declawing a Bengal Cat is extremely painful as their toes are longer than domestic cats. In my opinion declawing is horrific and if you love your furniture (which I do) train your cat. If a mistake is made remember it is just a piece of furniture. Lucy is precious, sweet and the bright light of my day. Declawing my Bengal Cat is simply not an option.
